ORLANDO, Fla - Michael Perez is spending the summer working as a legal intern for the Monroe County Attorney’s Office in Key West, Florida. The second-year Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law student is learning firsthand about the role of government.

“I assisted in drafting contracts for large scale county construction projects, helped update county ordinances, and provided research for county board meetings,” said Perez. “I hope to continue learning about the field of local government and I am very interested in a possible career in a Florida county attorney’s office in the future.”

Saginaw, Michigan native Loring Beckom is interning with Siemens Energy and gaining valuable experience. “Interning has been a great opportunity to gain exposure about the operation and responsibilities of an in-house legal team for an international business,” said Beckom, a third-year student. “I am being exposed to a great wealth of knowledge concerning the energy sector specifically, negotiating, and contractual agreements.”

Third-year FAMU Law student Robyn Boyd is working for the firm of Howell, Buchan and Strong. The Titusville native calls her summer law clerk position a great way to connect classroom knowledge with the legal field. “I’ve learned a lot here in just a few months and have been able to connect concepts and procedures I’m learning in class to real life cases. I am grateful to be a part of this great team,” said Boyd.

FAMU Law’s Office of Career Planning and Professional Development spearheads efforts to prepare students to apply for legal internships and externships by providing support such as resume writing sessions and career fairs.

“Law students need summer work experience (whether it be internships, externships, or other professional arrangements) to help them connect the dots, strengthen their abilities to research, write, and apply law, and become professionals,” said Assistant Dean for Career Planning and Professional Development Randolph Reliford.  “For students, a good summer experience can help them explore career paths and turn their talents into strengths.  For employers, these summer experiences provide a chance to identify and onboard talent and create a pipeline for their organizations.”

FAMU Law students are known as Rattlers for Justice as a call to action to shake up the system and fight for those in need of legal help.  They are motivated to make a difference.

“I want to be a lawyer because I am passionate about environmental justice. I grew up loving the natural Florida wetlands and studying their importance, so I would like to work to preserve them for future generations to enjoy,” said Miami, Florida native Perez.

“Becoming a lawyer gives me access to privileged information. With that information I can positively impact the lives of others in many ways, while achieving my own goals and aspirations,” said Beckom.

Boyd adds, “I want to be a lawyer because I have always had a passion for helping people, a knack for defense, and an ability to articulate ideas in such a way that others aren’t able to. I feel that I naturally have the tools to be able to help others through situations in which they would not know what to do or say.”
