Refreshed environment enhances support for legal writing development for individuals and groups, and through workshops and consultations.
ORLANDO, Fla. — The Writing Center at Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law recently underwent a refresh to workspaces to improve the student experience. Beyond aesthetics, the more functional environment makes room for more learning styles and student needs.
“The new updates seek to be inviting and intentional, to better support one-on-one consultations, collaborative learning, and independent study while creating a space that reflects the importance of writing and communication in legal education,” said Teresa Mule', director, Writing Center.
The modern furniture and workspace designs, accented with orange and green fabrics, provide options for students who want more privacy while studying or for group learning opportunities. The redesigned spaces also allow for greater flexibility for consultations, workshops, and small group sessions.
For students, the redesign is already making a difference in how they study, collaborate, and access Writing Center resources.
“The refresh to the Writing Center now parallels what a main campus university library/study space looks like,” said Alicia Fraga, third-year law student “There are more individualized spaces, whereas the Writing Center previously was all collaborative spaces. There are still collaborative spaces, but now there are even more resources that foster collaboration, such as whiteboards. It is already clear to me that students will have more choice in how they use the space.
Student input was key to the refresh and helped shape the redesign process.
“This is a space to provide our students with a service and to do that, their input is absolutely crucial,” said Mule'. “In the initial drafting phase of the refresh, I spoke openly with students that visited the Writing Center often about their needs and concerns for the space. Additionally, I encouraged students to review the blueprints of the space and to share any input with myself or Administrative Services.”
Mule' describes the Writing Center’s critical role as a gateway in connecting legal curriculum to academic writing techniques.
“The center plays an important role in supporting students as they develop the legal writing, analysis, and communication skills that are essential to success in law school and throughout their careers,” said Mule'. “Through individual guidance, the Writing Center provides feedback and resources that work in tandem with what our students are learning in the classroom.”
In addition to the updates, students continue to benefit from the Writing Center’s academic support services.
“I use the Writing Center for many things,” said Fraga. “It is a great study space and it’s an excellent space to meet with my classmates and collaborate. Whether I want to work alone or with others, I can count on the Writing Center to be available to me. I also work with Ms. Mule, our Director of the Writing Center. She is an excellent resource and I enjoy bringing my writing to her to get a set of fresh eyes on my work. Apart from writing, I have always appreciated the Writing Center’s dedicated scanning and printing station.”
The renovation reflects FAMU Law’s commitment to providing welcoming learning and study environments that support academic excellence.
“Strong writing and communication skills are foundational during law school and throughout legal careers,” said Paige Snelgro, assistant dean, Legal Skills. “The Writing Center renovations is one way we help ensure our students have the resources and guidance to succeed during their academic journey and their chosen paths in the legal profession.”
