FAMU LEGACY AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIP GALA
ORLANDO, Fla. – Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) College of Law hosted its first Legacy Awards and Scholarship Gala on Friday, November 16, honoring those credited with leading the charge to get the College of Law reestablished, community advocates, distinguished alumni, and Rattlers for Justice Scholarship winners.
The following honorees received awards:
LEGACY AWARD- John Due, ‘66
The Legacy Award recognizes individuals who exhibit a lifetime of commitment and sacrifice to civil rights and dedication to the Florida A&M University College of Law. Honoree John D. Due, Jr. has made tremendous accomplishments in his lifetime and he is well deserving of this prestigious award.
VANGUARD AWARD- Bishop Holifield, former Florida A&M University General Counsel
The Vanguard Award recognizes someone who displayed great bravery and dedication at the forefront of a battle against all odds. Our honoree Bishop Holifield orchestrated the legal efforts to get the Florida A&M University College of Law reestablished. The victorious effort took 15 years.
VISIONARY AWARD- Frederick S. Humphries, Ph.D.,eighth President of Florida A&M University
The Visionary Award goes to someone with the power of great imagination and foresight when it seems all hope is gone. Dr. Frederick S. Humphries had the wisdom to insist that legislative efforts begin to get the Florida A&M University College of Law reestablished. Under his leadership, the battle began and the mission was accomplished.
COMMUNITY ADVOCATE AWARD- Bernard and Shirley Kinsey; The Bernard and Shirley Kinsey Foundation for Art and Education
The Community Advocate Award exemplifies the best in community service. Bernard and Shirley Kinsey are on the forefront when it comes to giving back to the community. The Kinsey’s have raised millions of dollars in support of scholarships and grants. The Kinsey’s are deserving of this great honor.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD-
The Honorable Kelly Ingram, ‘08
The Honorable Kelly McCormack Ingram is the first Florida A&M University College of Law graduate to be elected as Brevard County Judge. Judge Ingram earned her Juris Doctor in 2008.
Amy Carter, ’08
Judge-elect Amy Carter is the first Florida A&M University College of Law graduate to be elected to a judgeship in Orange County. Ms. Carter received her Juris Doctor magna cum laude from the FAMU College of Law in 2008.
Gabrielle Sanders, ‘09
Judge-elect Gabrielle Sanders is the first Florida A&M University College of Law graduate to be elected as a judge serving in Osceola County. Ms. Sanders earned her Juris Doctor from FAMU College of Law in 2009.
In addition, FAMU LAW honored three current law students for the first student Rattler for Justice scholarship. The three honorees were students whose efforts on campus or in the community exemplified our history of serving the underserved while working to make a transformative difference in the world. The students each receive full-tuition scholarships for one year in honor of their selfless work.
