Shirley Wiegand holds both a Master’s Degree and a J.D. from the University of Kentucky. She practiced law for five years in Lexington, Kentucky before joining the University of Oklahoma, where she earned tenure and the rank of Professor of Law in 1994. In 1995 she joined the faculty of Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is currently Professor Emeritus there. She has also taught at American University and Stetson University as a Visiting Professor of Law. Professor Wiegand has written two books, the latest titled Books on Trial: Red Scare in the Heartland (University of Oklahoma Press 2007) and is currently working on a third book, this one involving the desegregation of America’s public libraries during the Civil Rights movement (like the second book, co-authored with her husband). She has also published numerous articles, most recently in the field of conflict of laws. She is currently completing an article in which she proposes several significant changes in Florida’s approach to conflict of laws.
Professor Wiegand is delighted to be teaching at FAMU’s Law School. After more than twenty years in the classroom, she finds her current students to be the most diverse and enthusiastic students she has had. Representing different cultures and backgrounds, they bring to the classroom a variety of perspectives which not only makes the class interesting, but it better prepares them for law practice in the modern world.
